Chapter 49

Midway through the first week, Spence finally heard from Detective Dean—in person.

“I thought you might like an update,” she said after he answered the door and let her in.

“Coffee, first?” he asked.

“Coffee, always,” she replied, so they went into the kitchen, he poured coffee for both of them, and they settled at the island.

“Mr. Knightly hasn’t talked about the murders,” she told him, after taking a drink. “Obviously his lawyer made certain of that. However, he’s been a fount of information about Mr. Lehmann and his book theft enterprise. The Hemingway wasn’t the only book Knightly stole for Lehmann, although he didn’t know it was Lehmann. It was all done through an intermediary. Usually, he turned the books over to that man. When he got the Hemingway, however, the man told him to take it directly to Mr. Lehmann’s bookshop. Knightly didn’t question that and did as he was told. Unfortunately, he got the address wrong and it ended up in your father’s hands. The rest, you know.”
