Chapter 14

“I ordered before going to the restroom,” Russell answered, crossing his hands in front of the empty plate. “I suggest the New York steak. I had it last night and it was really tender.”

Reggie happily accepted the suggestion. He was so elated, he couldn’t quite comprehend what he’d read on the menu moments ago. So he ordered the steak with baked potatoes, sour cream, and a lemonade.

After Diane left with his order, silence descended. Russell tapped his fingers on the table cloth, almost spasmodically. Clearly, he was nervous, too.

Reggie felt Russell’s gaze on him—on his cheeks, on his hair, his arms—and this confused him, exactly as it had a few hours earlier. He would have liked to ask Russell a thousand things—his favorite food cooked by his mother, the sweetest memory he had in his heart, what music he loved to listen to…but Reggie’s throat was dry, his tongue unable to move.
