Chapter 30

“I can’t do it. I can’t. As soon as I see him, I’ll start crying. He can take that damned trophy for all I care.”

“Reggie, listen, you deserve to win just as much as he does,” Carlos said in a quiet tone. “But what do you want to do? Go to the referee, the tournament director, the audience, your parents, and say, ‘No, I’m sorry, I can’t be in the playoff. Because, you know, I told Russell Lee I love him, and he told me to leave. So, I decided to give up and let him win without even fighting back.’ Is this what you want to do?”

Carlos’s voice had risen as he spoke, until his words shot out with the same intensity of an arrow leaving a taut bow. And the result wasn’t very different. Reggie staggered back as if he had been hit in his chest. He looked at Carlos, both speechless and terrified at the same time.

“Is thatwhat you want to do?” Carlos thundered again.

“No!” Reggie back. His courage seemed to have suddenly returned.
