Chapter 54

He heard steps coming closer, probably walking down stairs.

Don’t panic!he told himself.

A few seconds and Reggie would see Russell again. His heart danced against his ribs. He took the first step and the floorboards creaked.

He stopped and looked at the bag in his hands.

Maybe it was too big. He’d only filled it with a couple things, but what if Russell misinterpreted it? Thinking Reggie had brought clothes for a full week when Russell had just called to tell him, “Hey, I’m sorry I reacted so badly. I’m flattered you love me, and if you want, we can still be friends, but now you have to go back to Chicago.” Reggie was filled with anguish again, looking at his bag with fear, as if it were a poisonous viper. Damn it, he’d like to be able to accept the disappointment, but he couldn’t do it.

Then, at the top of the stairs, Russell appeared.
