After leaving the marina, he drove to the shopping center and then pulled into the parking lot. He chose a spot where he could watch the traffic and then picked up the newly acquired phone. From the contact list, he selected Fanny Devane and called her, putting the call on speakerphone. Ron’s tired voice answered.

“Did something happen?”

“No,” Ron said. “He’s just checking something out. Did you have any trouble getting the phone?”

“Sort of,” Chris said. He told Ron about his encounter with Travis and his troubled reaction. “He didn’t do anything but offer to help, but I felt like he intended to hurt me.”

“That prick,” Ron said. “If it is him, I can’t promise I’ll be nice when we catch him.”
