Chapter 36

The deputy looked in the back of Chris’s vehicle before he stopped at the window. “I need to see your license.”

“What’s the problem, deputy?” Chris handed his ID to him.

“Looks like you have a light out.” The deputy looked at his driver’s license, then said, “I’ll be back. Remain in your car.”

“Sure,” Chris said politely, but his anger at James boiled.

The deputy looked inside Chris’s vehicle again as he walked back to his car and got in.

Chris watched the deputy in his side mirror. “Nobody here but me.”

While the deputy called it in, Chris rubbed his fingers and let out several sighs. No doubt, James was behind this. If the cops suspected Dylan and Ron were with Chris, what would they do when they found him alone?

Chris took a deep breath and slowly let it out while the deputy headed toward him.

The deputy stepped up to the window and then handed Chris his license. “You’re free to go.”

“Thanks.”
