“We’ll get your house secure again, don’t worry,” his dad said. “You just stay safe tonight, and if you talk to Dylan, tell him the same.”


The guest bedroom door opened and James stepped out, then marched over to Chris with his eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched. He smiled as he extended his hand to Chris’s dad. “Mr. Mason.”


“Detective,” Lance Mason said, shaking James’s hand. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”


Chris looked at his dad. “You’ll be okay here?”


Sorensen and Skinner left the guest bedroom and walked out of the house.


“Yeah,” James said. “We should go.”


His dad nodded. “Let me know what I can do to help.”


“I will,” Chris said, then followed James to the garage. 23
