Chapter 61

The front door banged against the chain.

Chris froze while he tried to think of what to grab for a weapon.

“Chris?” James said from the hallway.

He breathed out a sigh of relief and hurried to the door. “Yeah,” he said, “sorry, I didn’t know you were there.” He closed the door, slid the chain back and then opened it wide for James. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know,” James said as he went to the window. “You alone?”

“Yes.”

“Looks like the whole block is out.” James took his phone from his pocket and started to call someone, when the lights flickered and then went off again.

Chris wrapped his arms around himself.

The lights came on. Chris held his breath as he waited, hoping they stayed on. After a few heartbeats, he started to relax.

His phone rang. It was Dylan. “Yeah,” Chris said.

“You okay?” Dylan asked.

“Yeah, James is here.”

“Okay,” Dylan said. “Just checking. Call us if you need us.”

“I will.”
