Close to midnight, I started to drift off to sleep with the book in my hands. My eyes slowly closed, and I yawned. Eventually, I turned the cabin’s light off in the living room, walked into the bedroom I had chosen to use, and went to bed.

February 9
Someone had broken into my uncle’s cabin the next morning while I slept. I lay in bed, smelling bacon, eggs, and the strong scent of percolated coffee. I also smelled the heavy scent of a man: sandalwood mixed with sweat.
“Officer Noah Rexington at my service,” I whispered to the bedroom, grinning, knowing he had invaded the cabin without permission. Not that I minded since I liked having him around, not just for protection, but also for my soul and to fill my liking.
