On the first three steps, I pulled the hatch closed behind me, sealing me in the darkness. The short stairwell’s cement walls curved around me as I climbed down the four remaining steps. Steel railings lined both of my sides. Within seconds, I stood at the bottom of the steps, caught in a thick pitch-black.
