Chapter 9

When finally the door to Sister Angelica’s room was opened, Sebastian jumped from his chair. The nun came out with Debra and Ted. Smiling, Ted said to Sebastian, “Let’s go home now, boy.”

Sebastian leaped up and put his arms around Ted’s neck, clinging like he’d never let go.

“I’m so happy for you, Sebastian.” Sister Angelica patted his back. He tensed at the touch, gritting his teeth. He was getting away from her, out of this cursed place, never coming back again. He would spend his life with Ted because he knew that they belonged to each other.

Except that they did not. Debra cleared her throat behind him and, reluctantly, Sebastian released his grip on Ted’s neck and slid down from him. He turned around and hugged her, too, though not with the same enthusiasm as he had hugged Ted. If Debra noticed, she didn’t say anything.
