Chapter 38

“Really?” I’m intrigued. “Like what?”

With a shrug, Derek says, “You know I didn’t go to college, right?”

This seems off-topic, but I humor him. “No, actually I thought you did a year or two, maybe even got your associate’s, then left school when your band got the record deal.”

“Yeah, no.” Derek laughs. “My mother set up a savings account for me that I couldn’t touch until I turned eighteen, so I thought I didn’t need to bother with college. I thought I’d cash out the account and live off that while I tried to hit it big.”

I sense that didn’t happen. “But…?”

“Turned out, I couldn’t just dip into the account,” Derek admits. “It wasn’t even in my name. My mom had always told me the money was mine, but it wasn’t until I said I didn’t plan on going to college that she told me that was the onlything the money was for. She waited a year or so, probably hoping I’d change my mind. Then I got the deal and thought fuck it, I don’t need her money. I was going to be a big name rock star.”
