Chapter 40

This is exactly what I hoped to guard against,I tell myself, but it’s no use. My body’s thinking with the wrong head, and who am I kidding, anyway? I never could keep him at bay. I know I never really wanted to.

But as much as I want to pull him back to me, I know I need to get going. Riley’s waiting for me, if nothing else. Straightening my jacket as I sit up, I tell him, “Well, call me.”

“I will,” he promises.

Slowly my senses come back to me. “Sometime tomorrow, at the office. We need to review your mother’s service on Monday.”

Derek nods. “Sure.”

I lean over for a final kiss. “Goodnight,” I whisper against his lips.

Then I get out of the car before either of us can change our minds.
