“Long story short, I decided to drive myself to the liquor store. I’m not really sure what happened and in what order, but I…” Oliver cleared his throat. His body didn’t want to say the words, but his mind could think of nothing else. “I ran over a kid. It was after school. He had this…He had this goddamned construction paper crafty thing in one hand and all I could see was that blowing in the wind away from his tiny little body there on the sidewalk.”

Cole gasped in surprise and clung to Oliver as they both cried. Oliver’s body heaved as he sobbed. His mind a complicated mix of anger, frustration, embarrassment, and guilt. He could feel Cole’s face pressed against his as Cole held him tightly.
