Pip was staring up at him with a confused expression. “But I didn’t tell my friends on the computer that I would be gone.”
“I told you yesterday that you were going to visit Dad in Otterburn Park for the weekend.” Rain put his hands on Pip’s shoulders. “Philip, please, he misses you and I need to organize our new place, okay?” He kissed Pip’s head. “Okay? Please?”
Rain rushed out of the room, stubbed his toe on a box in the hallway, and bit his knuckles, hoping not to curse out loud. He saw Milo standing stiffly on his porch, looking around, obviously appraising the neighborhood.
He took a deep breath and opened the door.
Dressed casually, but impeccably, Milo turned his way. Then to Rain’s surprise, Milo’s usual cold blue eyes turned warm and he took a step closer. “Hi,” he said in a husky voice. He eyed Rain over and shook his head. “Your socks don’t match.”
