Chapter 50

On the screen, Faustina’s face turned serious. “That’s great,” she said, without smiling. “Wow.”

Shame and hurt made his throat tight and Rain looked away from the computer. “I think I hear Pip getting up,” he sputtered, feeling stupid. She was judging him, he could read her disapproval in her eyes. She probably thought he was weak and throwing himself at the first man who’d given him attention. “I’ll call Mom later, I promise.”

“Rain, you’ve only known Tristan for such a short time.” Faustina paused, obviously choosing her words carefully. “Don’t you think it’s a little too early to be talking about love?”

If she was uncomfortable with him talking about love, then he wouldn’t say another word about it—but he’d still feel it. “No, you’re right,” he said in a thin voice, “but I really have to go. I’ll talk to you soon, okay?”

“Okay…I’ll catch you later then.” Faustina seemed to hesitate.

“Don’t worry,” Rain said, forcing a smile. “I have things under control.”
