“That’s right,” Sheila chimed in, her voice betraying the emotion she must have been feeling sitting so close to Philip, yet unrevealed to him. Tristan felt for her. He understood that position all too well.

Philip nodded and squeezed his hands together.

Moments later, Mrs. Brien took to the stage, stepped into the pool of light, then spoke into the microphone. She thanked them for their presence and explained the concept behind Rain’s show, urging parents to give generously, as the proceeds of the show would go to the school and be used to provide the two school specialists with what they needed to support children with learning disabilities or special needs. When she spoke of Rain’s talent and dedication, her voice was full of emotion and Tristan knew she’d been touched by Rain, too.

After asking them to shut their phones off, she left the stage and the lights went down.

The kids in the room sighed and laughed, the energy swelling inside the auditorium.
