Chapter 8

“What do you think?” Morse replied.

“Seventy-thirty, probably.”

“Exactly. The only thing keeping him here might be who he decides to go after first. He hasn’t been paired with too many agents, for obvious reasons. Only those who had what it took to keep a tight rein on him.”

Gage had opened the file while they talked. On the second page was the list of those agents. He smiled sourly. “If he works alphabetically, Kegan, you and I are second and third on the list.”

“There’s no certainty that will be his criteria,” Kegan responded.

“True, but,” Gage checked, “only four of us are in the country, from what this says.” He turned to Morse. “How recently was this updated?”

“Last Friday.”

“So it’s only two days old. Good. Of course, if Ash has been keeping tabs, he’ll think Kegan’s a no-go, since he hasn’t been sighted in two months, and that it’s not because he’s off on a job.”

“Then we have to get the word out that I’m back,” Kegan stated.
