Chapter 28

“Closing early?” asked a familiar voice, and Clark crunched across the lot toward them. Dom muttered something about starting a load of laundry and dashed off to his car, leaving Kiko to fend for himself.

“Long day,” said Kiko. “Anything I can do for you, Clark? I’m only opening back up for paying customers.”

A glint flashed through the reporter’s eye like he was tempted to buy a tiny item, a can of soda or an egg-shaped truffle, just to inconvenience Kiko, but he apparently decided against it in favor of taking his standard more understanding tactic.

“Just heard you were robbed,” said Clark. “Thought you might have something to say about it? Reassure your customers?”

“It wasn’t robbery,” said Kiko. He still hadn’t completely cleaned the building, but he had checked for any missing items. He was out a few broken or unwrapped things, but nothing was truly missing.
