Chapter 31

“Did you get laid?” asked Dom. Kiko glared at him.

“Drink your beer,” he said, then to a stuttering Chad, “Don’t answer that. Why is Roy celebrating your birthday with you a problem?”

“I didn’t think this would happen,” said Chad. “We, like, weren’t serious or anything. No Christmas gifts. Nothing like that. I was all casual.”

Dom drank instead of laughing. Chad really was unobservant. He’d moved in with Roy Vang, the nursing student, over his winter break and just now was realizing what it meant. They made a nice enough couple, but Dom didn’t see them lasting. Chad never had luck with his girlfriend, either, and it seemed pretty clear he still hadn’t caught on how relationships worked.

“Did you like the way you spent your birthday?” asked Kiko. He rinsed the strawberries and started cutting them.

“Well, yeah, boss. Literally the best birthday ever.”

“And would you want to repeat those kinds of events in the future?”
