Chapter 44

He was home. Not just with Kiko. Here in this weird little town. All of it.

“It’s what she wanted before she died, so it’s what we’re doing,” said Dom. He would have gone on, but Buddy was approaching, looking a bit sheepish.

“I’ll be over soon,” said Kiko, “Once it’s a little less busy.”

Buddy shook his head.

“I have an announcement,” he said.

“He’s not getting a lizard,” said Dom, but Buddy was already clapping his hands and calling for everyone’s attention. Dom noticed the guy in the orange coat grabbing the kid he came in with and wiping her hands, probably wanting to get going before Buddy caused a disturbance.

Kiko glanced at Dom, not looking happy, but everyone was paying attention to Buddy now.

“Thanks,” said Buddy as the chatter grew to murmurs and then silence. “Some of you know I had a bearded dragon over there by the books. Well, it got out.”
