The basement opened before me, left, right, and ahead. I saw an abandoned washer and dryer to the far right. Next to the appliances sat a half dozen boxes labeled Holidayin black Sharpie. To the left sat a water heater and furnace. There was a stack of plastic containers without labels. I walked forwards through the gray darkness, observing shadows: a Huffy, two vacuums, and a wooden shelf filled with half used paint cans.
