“I’m sorry,” he said. “So very sorry. I keep forgetting, but I am trying, really, I am.”

“I know that. It’s okay.”

He stepped back to look at her. “Are you sure? I mean, you were talking to someone, weren’t you?”

The pink shifted, coloring her cheeks red. She averted her gaze. “Myself. Just myself.”

Perhaps better than anyone he knew when she was lying. “Daisy?”

A heart beat passed.

Then she smiled, jumping free of his grip and crossing toward the desk where she began to play with a stack of books. “So what’s this about ice cream? Do you have a specific place in mind and do they sell blue moon?”
