Matt laughed out loud. With the faucet running, he soaped up the dishes and rinsed them off at the same time, which surely had to cut the job in half, no? Soon everything was damp and glistening in the dish drainer beside the sink. He used the last of the soap in the sponge to clean out the sink itself, then rinsed his hands before turning off the faucet.
By this time Sadie’s bowl was empty again, and she sat on her haunches looking up at him with sad eyes. As Matt grabbed a towel to dry his hands, he laughed again. “No dice, babe,” he told her. “I know you already ate. I fed you, remember?”
She whined as if she understood exactly what he’d said and begged him to reconsider. When he made no move to open the cabinet containing her food, though, she turned and, tail and head down, slowly padded back to her spot by the apartment door. She looked so dejected, Matt almost called her back for another bowl.
