Chapter 11

::I think I have an answer, a long term answer to our problem.::

He waited impatiently for a response. At first, he thought either he had not sent with enough force, Aron was otherwise occupied, or maybe they were just too far apart for telepathy to work. But he’d never known distance to be a barrier before. He tried for a moment to recall. His mind felt strangely fuzzy, as if thoughts were illusive and flickering, fireflies blinking in and out of his brain.

Just ahead the deepening wash curved. He could only see about fifty feet past where he had paused. A frisson of concern danced down his spine. Something lurked there, just out of sight around that bend.

::Harlane, I think something is close. Where are you?::

Aron’s second answered quickly. ::I’m about half a mile from you. Something caught my attention and I took a small detour to investigate. Wait right there. I will come as fast as I can.::

::But not fast enough.::
