“Who shot the traitor?” Aron’s voice came out even harsher than he intended, but he could not contain his fury.

Mar stepped forward, a mixture of pride, uncertainty, and defiance in his expression. “‘Twas I. We could not let this traitor get away with all he has done! Yes, I killed him, and he deserved to die.”

“Perhaps, but not until we extracted any information from him that we could. True, he would probably not have wished to cooperate but there are ways…In human language, you blew it, Marishal. Next time, think before you act.”

For a moment, they held each other’s gazes in a staring match. Marishal dropped his eyes first. “Aye,” he mumbled.

Alex and Manuel approached Aron. “Can we take the Trogue’s remains back? It’ll be a clumsy burden, but we can rig some kind of a litter or travois and take turns with the load.”
