“But I wasn’t a witness,” Tony protested. “I just found the body. Me and Alan.”

“I understand that, but you did say you heard Mr. Thorne’s cry for help.”

Tony nodded. “Technically making me an aural witness.”

Sanders chuckled. “Is that a writer’s word for hearing something?”

“I guess?” Tony shrugged.

Dropping that subject, Sanders said, “You’re certain there’s nothing else you remember?”

“No. I mean, yes, I’m certain.”

“All right. Thank you for coming in.”

“May I ask something?” Tony said. “Do you have any idea how the killer got in and out of the building?”

“No,” Sanders replied succinctly.

“Meaning you wouldn’t tell me even if you did.” Tony got a brief nod from the detective, thanked him—although what for, I have no clue—and left.
