“No. Just when Anna screamed. That came through loud and clear.”
“I’m going to talk with her. Please don’t leave.” Sanders shot them a look that said they hadn’t better before going down to knock on Anna’s door.
“Did you hear that a couple of the old-timers are moving out?” Alan asked Tony after Sanders left.
“Yes,” Tony replied. “I guess I can’t blame them.”
“You thinking of doing the same thing?”
“No. Why would I?”
Alan shrugged. “In case you haven’t noticed, you’re a lot closer to the victims’ ages than us oldsters, at least from what I could see of this last one.”
Tony had an off-the-wall, silly thought that he uttered without thinking. “So, someone’s killing off anyone under thirty so our apartments will be available for you old guys?”
Alan looked shocked for a second, then laughed. “Yep. They want to turn the building into a retirement home.”
“Jesus,” the plumber muttered, but he was smiling.
