“Can you look these over and sign them, please? They’re regarding the water plant and chlorine issues.”

“Of course, young man,” Mayor Nelson said. As Luther handed over the clipboard to her, attempting to make his prompt exit back to his desk, she called out to him, “Step in here, Luther. I want to create a love connection, if you don’t mind. And close the door behind you.”

Luther listened.

Mayor Nelson stood, stared at me, then at Luther. She asked the intern, “You young people don’t mind talking about your sexuality, do you?”

“Not really,” Luther replied.

“May I ask if you like men or women, or both?” Mayor Nelson inquired.

Jesus. I felt she was crossing lines of sexual harassment and a handful of other crimes in the workplace

“I like older men,” Luther said.

She waved a hand at me. “And what of Mr. Landing? Do you find him attractive?”

Luther blushed every shade of red on the color wheel. “I’d rather not say.”
