I set off, a little worse the wear, but off just the same. I ran through the dense woods, nose aimed at the aroma, until it gradually grew stronger and stronger. Three people. Three people who didn’t smell like carcasses. Just then, though, I noticed it. Not three, but four. But how was that possible? There were only three in the senator’s party. My heart suddenly stopped, even as I continued onward. Had I been chasing the wrong people? Was this group even in trouble? And why did the fourth smell strangely familiar?

I reached a clearing, the waterfall just up ahead. I spotted the raft. It was clinging to yet another tree that had sprung from yet another rock, a limb cast downward, yellow rubber tethered to it. The three men weren’t in the water. The three men weren’t smashed against the rocks beneath the waterfall. The three men, in fact, were standing on the shore, laughing as they patted the back of the fourth man—namely my boyfriend.
