Chapter 35

Doug stared at me from his side of the couch. “Sorry, Lucas.”

I nodded and looked his way. “I thought this superhero stuff was supposed to be easier. You rescue, you do good, you make the world a better place. Altruistic would be the word for it. But Craig is selling his soul for an ID badge. Plus, I broke my roommate’s heart. Plus-plus, I didn’t care who I hurt. Revenge and altruism shouldn’t be strange bedfellows, Doug.” I sighed. I pouted. “I feel lost. I feel lost, and I’m not even in my twenties yet. I want the world to be black and white, good and evil, but suddenly I find that everything is gray, dismally gray.”

He grinned. “You’re very overdramatic for someone who’s only eighteen.”

“I feel much older.”

He shrugged. “Well, you were raised by wolves and lived in the wilderness for years and years. That’s got to age a person.”

“You think?”

He shrugged. “Not a clue, Lucas. Not a clue. But at least you see what your ex is doing as wrong. That’s something.”
