Chapter 5

“Wait,” called Ezra. “Will I see you again? Tomorrow?”

Liam stopped and called back, “Yes”, but heard the lack of conviction in his voice and felt sure Ezra could hear it, too.

At the shore, he stepped out of the water, dripping and puffing. He wiped his eyes and spat salty water from his mouth. “How are you, Buster?” he asked, squatting by his son.

“Nearly finished. Can you help me find some shells for windows?”

“Sure, let’s go.”

Liam placed a protective hand in the centre of his son’s back and looked out to sea. Ezra waved to him, then disappeared into the water before Liam had a chance to wave back. Even at that point, he still wasn’t entirely convinced he hadn’t imagined the whole thing.
