Chapter 13

Ezra showed him a great shipwreck, with some of the wooden structure visible through the coral and seaweed. Off to one side lay a coral-encrusted cannon and what looked like a bottle. How long had these things been here? How many people had perished?

Onwards they swam, attracting no more than a few cursory glances from the locals, who went about their business in silence and ever watchful for anything larger or with more teeth. Ezra pointed upwards, drawing Liam’s attention to a humpback whale and her calf, coasting just beneath the surface like a giant spaceship through the cosmos. Liam wanted to swim up and say “hello,” or at least stay a little longer and watch unobtrusively from below, but Ezra had him by the hand and since his grip was strong, he had no choice but to follow.
