Chapter 23

It would be the perfect time to ask for extended leave. The downside? Their quietest period was followed immediately by their busiest period.

After work, he drove to the beach. Ezra would be waiting for an answer.

“I don’t have one,” said Liam.

A dark look came over Ezra’s face, then vanished as quickly as it had appeared. They hugged in the water, their bodies pressed together, Liam’s head on Ezra’s broad shoulder.

“I know this isn’t easy for you,” said Ezra, “but I must leave any day now. The ocean currents are changing, and soon the water will be too cold for me to stay.”

Liam, his cheek still resting on Ezra’s shoulder, listened until he’d finished talking. “I know. I know. It’s not easy for you, but, as you know, it really isn’t easy for me. Not only is there Lucas to consider, but my job, bills. I have responsibilities that you don’t. And you know that if I didn’t have them, I’d be with you in a second.”
