“No shit! The recruiters are here. If we get to the town—”

“I don’t think you understand me,” said Talfryn. He didn’t make a move to grab Akton again. “Verypowerful, Akton. Think shifter powerful. More than a fox or a wolf—someone with magic.”

Akton glared at him for a moment. However smart Talfryn was, however well-read, he couldn’t know who was attacking a town without seeing them. And Akton didn’t have time to think about any of it.

“I’m not arguing with you,” he said, turning back to the path. “People are dying.”

“At least don’t use the road,” said Talfryn, moving into the trees. If it would stop him from getting in Akton’s way, he’d go for it. Akton ducked into the trees and followed Talfryn, who made a direct line for the town despite his whining.
