“You shift for them,” said Shanna, like she thought Eynri was taking too long to explain to Akton. He figured she didn’t see him as useful. “Sometimes stay shifted for them. You get the occasional dignitary who enjoys having a hawk constantly on her shoulder, able to follow her commands. You get the odd pervert who wants you to show him how fast you can heal. That’s the trade you’re looking for, isn’t it?”

“Your standard of living is very high,” said Eynri again. “Excellent food, healers, mobility around the palace and its gardens, ability to collect wealth—Ylenia permits you to keep any gifts you’re given.”

“But I have to perform,” said Akton, hating the thought. Eynri spread his hands as if to say, there it was, and Akton clenched his jaw.
