Chapter 91

“He lived,” he said. Iyona released her wind orbs but they missed Talfryn by so much he didn’t even flinch. “Why do you care?”

She made a motion like she wanted him to return fire. He obliged, also aiming at a point away from her.

“Never saw that before. You laid your life down for him, stood up to Basil.”

“Good for you. What are you here for?”

“You were working with the Guard and the townspeople,” said Iyona. She lowered her hands and took a few steps forward. “I’m considering doing the same.”

Talfryn dropped his hands.

“You’re switching sides?” he asked. Akton would never trust her. But he wasn’t Akton. He’d gotten used to reading people over his years of dealing with injured people, or people wanting his advice, or travelers. And something about Iyona’s shifter presence seemed to resonate with him too.

She raised her chin.

“I wouldn’t put it that way,” she said. “The queen and Basil aren’t much different, after all. I see it more as…entering a different room in a house.”
