Chapter 107

“They’d better still have beer left,” said Akton, trying to make light of the situation, but Talfryn merely turned away.

The streets weren’t totally empty, but the few people scurrying along them didn’t seem to recognize them. Talfryn seemed distressed by this.

“It hasn’t even been a year,” he muttered. “Do we really look so different?”

“Maybe it’s the horses.”

Talfryn rolled his eyes, rode around to the back of the apothecary, then hesitated. A light snow fell, and the glow from inside the building shone in the yard behind it. Inside, Akton assumed Glenna was treating someone, or chatting with a friend, or preparing spells to have on hand.

Akton made the first move, dismounted and tied his horse up, then tied Talfryn’s for him. He extended a hand.

“It’s not going to be any easier ten minutes from now,” he said. “And I’m cold.”

Talfryn sighed, but dismounted.

“You should have left your hood up, then.”
