Chapter 19

The sunlight was peachy, throwing golden fingers of light all over the water. “You have this gift,” Billy said, looking over at Xavier. “You make everything fascinating.”

“Maybe I should be a damn tour guide, or something.” Xavier scoffed, but his cheeks colored slightly. “Thank you, though. I like keeping the past alive. I need to keep feeling it around me. It gives my own life some kind of meaning. I don’t wanna be cut from the wheel. I wanna turn with it.”

Billy couldn’t even take standing so close to Xavier. “That’s nice,” he muttered, feeling feverish.

“You all right?”

“Yeah, yeah. Sure.”

“Let’s sit down here. It’s quiet. It’s nice.”

Billy sat shoulder to shoulder with Xavier, their legs touching in the grass. Anxious, he pulled on some weeds—anything to keep his hands busy.
