Chapter 30

On Billy’s watch, Mickey Mouse read a little over nine.

Billy hesitated, but decided he wouldn’t wake Xavier yet. Last night, he’d spotted a pay phone near the gas station’s main building under the only working street lamp and this was as good of a time as ever to make a few phone calls. He gently opened the glove compartment and raked up some loose change. He popped his door open and quietly climbed out, then shut his door, but not all the way so as not to wake Xavier. The pay phone was within view—if Xavier woke while he was making calls, he’d see him standing there and wouldn’t panic.
