Chapter 64

Xavier leaned in and touched Billy’s hand. “You okay, Billy the Beautiful?”

“Yes, but I wanna leave soon.”

“Yeah…soon.” Xavier’s eyes were so dark, the pupils were indiscernible. “Soon,” he said again, looking back at Fabienne. The pot mixed in with the bourbon obviously was too much for Xavier. His eyelids were starting to droop.

They passed the joint around until it was smoked to the tip and Billy burned his lips with the last hit. He’d lost this battle. Couldn’t keep trying to get Xavier’s attention.

Slowly, a drug-induced lucidity flooded Billy’s mind.

“Hey,” August said, close to his ear, “let’s get some air. I think you need it.” He tugged on Billy’s shirt. “Seriously, come on.” He stood and looked down at him. “There’s a lovely courtyard out back. Let me show you.”

Billy hesitated and looked at Xavier.

But Xavier couldn’t be reached anymore. He lay on his side, with his eyes closed and a serene smile on his face. What was he thinking of? Where was he right now?
