Chapter 68

“You’re bleeding, man. Lemme see. Come on. Come on. Lemme see.” Byron came closer and scowling, touched the side of Xavier’s head, gently brushing his hair away from the cut. “Okay, it’s not so deep. Lemme get the first aid kit downstairs. Don’t go anywhere, okay?” He stopped in the door and looked back at him. “Did you and Billy have a fight? Is that what happened?”

Xavier slid down against the back wall and sat. He held the bag and stared at the bed, where this afternoon, he’d promised Billy everything would be all right. “I fucked up. I left him there.”

“Man, you look messed up,” Byron whispered. “Stay put.” He left the room. “I’ll be right back.”

Cold all over, Xavier looked at the space in the open door, willing Billy to appear. Then he closed his eyes and prayed for the first time in a long while.

“Uh, can you—can you wait here for a second?” Billy leaned in between the car seats, looking at the cab driver. “I’ll go get some money and come right back.”
