Chapter 13

Jake exhaled. “I see.”

“I’m sorry about this, Jake, you’ve been a wonderful coach, but I don’t see any other way. You wouldn’t want the parents to make trouble for the school…or for you. I didn’t want to have to mention this, Jake, but some of the parents have said they’d call the police.”

“The police?”

Mason looked away. “They’d make claims of improper touching of their children if you didn’t leave as coach.”

He swallowed. He definitely got the implication there. A gay football coach? They would make definite trouble for him.

Jake nodded, tightening his jaw. He stood. “Okay. I resign.” He supposed he could fight it. But the idea of his name involved in some sort of court case and folks he’d known all his life claiming he’d been doing unspeakable things…he just couldn’t do that.

“Effective?” Henry Mason stood, too.

“Immediately, I guess.”
