Chapter 10

Tim had dozed off, slouched against the door on the passenger side when he felt the vehicle slow and then start up a steeper grade. He’d come out of a nap when they left the divided highway just past Socorro to head west to Magdalena, but the slower pace on the old-style two-lane had soon lulled him off again. Minutes later, DeVore drove into an open carport and turned off the motor.

“We’re here.”

Tim released his seat belt and stumbled from the cab. At first, all he saw was darkness. Then he began to see the stars…countless arrays of them. The house loomed as a darker shadow, seeming to be almost a part of the hillside where it sat. DeVore led him to a door, which he unlocked, then opened to reach in and turn on a light.
