“Obvious, yes,” the officer replied. “But he did it when he knew no one was home.”

“Why didn’t it set off the motion detectors?” Jack asked.

“I’d say because he pushed the knife into the wood slowly enough to keep that from happening, rather than forcefully stabbing it in. Whether that was because he suspected you might have sensors, or that was just how he is…” The officer shrugged.

“Or, he was hammered, and being careful to get it right,” Max said sourly. “He was like that, when he was drunk and trying to accomplish a task. Taking his time, trying to make it seem as if he was in control.”

“Some drunks are like that,” the officer agreed. “Unless you have more questions, we’ll be leaving.”

“Nothing I can think of,” Max replied, getting head shakes from Deacon and Jack. “Thank you for your help.”
