Art mimed pulling a gun, so Max texted, All right. I will be armed

Max sucked in a breath when he saw, Could have figured since your boyfriend owns a gun shop. I will be, too. That was followed by a smiley emoji before Tony hung up.

“Fucking bastard,” Max spat out.

“Don’t erase that,” Art warned.

“Not planning on it.” Max went into his office to transfer a copy of the text messages to his file on Tony. When Art asked, he printed the file to give to him.

“All right. We’re set up,” Burns said when Art and Max returned to the living room. “Jack, it’s time for you to leave.”

For a moment, Jack looked rebellious. Then he got his jacket, came back to hug Max with a murmured, “You be damned careful.”

“I plan on it, and I’ve got help. So stop worrying.”

“Easier said than done.” Jack hugged him again before leaving the house. Max sucked in a breath as he heard him start his car and drive away.
