Max did stay in bed for a while longer. Then, bored, and knowing he had his own business that needed his attention, he got ready to face the day. Showering didn’t happen, because of the bandages. Instead, he gave himself a sponge bath, which made him feel almost human again. When he was dressed, he knocked on Jack’s door, then went into his study.

“You really can go catch the last of your classes for the day,” he said.

“Nope. Not until tomorrow.” Jack grinned. “For once, I have a legitimate excuse for cutting them. Are you hungry?”

“I just ate breakfast,” Max pointed out.

“Two hours ago. Did you take your pills?”

“It’s too soon. Damn. Quit trying to baby me.”

Jack laughed. “You spent most of my life doing that to me. Turnabout and all that.”

“Well stop. I appreciate the concern, but I’m fine.”

“Okay. By the way, the carpet in your office is clean, but probably still damp.”

“You got people here that fast?” Max asked, surprised.
