Chapter 46

“Feel like going ice skating?” Deacon asked Max after the Sunday workout class.

“In the dark?”

“Nope. This afternoon. I can get my friend to cover for me.”

Max arched an eyebrow. “Can, or have?”

Deacon laughed. “You know me too well. It’s all set-up, if you’re interested.”

“Sure. Why not? The worst that happens is we get frostbite, or break an ankle.”

“And the best is, we have a ball holding each other up so we don’t make fools of ourselves.”

After Deacon changed into enough layers of clothing to keep him from freezing, topped by a heavy winter jacket, they drove to Max’s house, where he did the same. Then it was off to the pond Deacon had told Max about.

“I did tell you it’s been years since I’ve done this,” Max said as they drove across the city.

“Yep. Hopefully it’s like riding a bike. Once you’ve learned, you never forget.”

“I sucked at bike riding. I’ve got scars on my knees to prove it,” Max said. “Lousy sense of balance.”
