Chapter 49

Since Deacon had spent a week there, while they were dealing with the Tony problem, as well as many nights once he and Max had cemented their relationship, he had no problem getting acclimated to day to day life with Max and Jack—and vice versa.

“What’s for dinner, and who’s cooking?” Jack asked, popping into Max’s office the day after Max had heard from the prosecutor.

“It’s your turn, so you get to decide.”

“Deacon’s lucky. He gets a pass because of the hours he works,” Jack grumped.

“You sound like a spoiled brat,” Max replied, uncertain whether to be amused, or worried. “You know he’d do it, if he was around.” He frowned, looking hard at his nephew. “Are you having second thoughts about his moving in?”

“Not at all,” Jack protested, flopping down in one of the office chairs. “He’s a great guy. I’m glad the two of you are together.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“Nothing. Sorry. Just a rough day at school, I guess.”
