Chapter 47

Dearne felt sick.

“We didn’t know what to do.”

“I imagine you didn’t.”

Between the three of us we decided the best thing to do was to get you to safety and pretend you hadn’t turned up.

Dearne was aware he was gaping at her. “Didn’t Holbrook’s men tell him what had happened?”

“I don’t know. Holbrook never said a word. Bolton and I managed to get you to Denton and you know the rest. It came as something of a shock to discover the house had been sold.”

“Lady Araminta didn’t know?” Will said.

Miss Rose shook her head. “No. She was surprised, because Captain Dearne had told her he would leave the house to her should anything happen to him whilst he was fighting on the Continent.”

Dearne’s head pounded. “That’s true. I did speak to her. I told her I had made a will after grandmother died and left me the house. I wanted Minty to have it so she could leave Holbrook House.” Dearne rubbed his temple. “I saw to it when I was on leave.”

“That is how Lady Araminta recalls it.”
